No cannon here anymore, but that’s ok, now you can get a history lesson instead. Do you see way out there, off in the distance, that there is a line of trees? It is from about that far away, or more, that the cannons that destroyed the walls of this fort were stationed. The fort was designed to withstand all but the biggest cannons available in the early 1800s. Those had a range of a half mile, so the enemy had to get right up close to you. If they could take you out from that great of a distance and do so as effectively as happened here, well, the active duty days of this fort and all the many like it along the eastern seaboard of the US were extremely numbered.
