Fort Pulaski: dramatically rendered obsolete in the course of a Civil War battle where Northern troops tested a newly developed rifled artillery cannon. Successfully tested, as they destroyed one of the outer walls from 4-5 miles away on a neighboring island almost destroying the fort’s powder magazine in the process. Until that moment even the attacking Union troops thought the fort was impenetrable. The fall of Fort Pulaski effectively closed the port of Savannah seriously hindering the Confederate war effort.
