One of the things I enjoy exploring is geology. I have had a love for history for as long as I can remember and recently realized that what I loved most about it was trying to figure out the bigger story. All the little stories I read are connected in that they all took place on this planet. Geology is the beginning of the story. It provides the backstory. And if you don’t understand that, you will never know the real reasons why certain things happened. Weather and climate influence human actions and are reflected in and influenced by geology. Cultures develop in relation to the landscape around them. It is all very fasinating. And if you really want to know the whys you need to step back a bit further.

I was reminded of that as I looked at this picture. Taken on the rim of the remains of a volcano. An event that changed the history of the area around it. This stuff is really amazing.
