Independence Rock

Independence Rock. Geologically, not very impressive. Historically, it is really cool. As a landmark on the Oregon Trail, there are thousands of names carved into its granite surface. Travelers from the mid 1840s through (unfortunately) today have climbed the rock to let history know that they passed nearby. I like to climb up and photograph the names when I go past. Nothing real fancy, just documentary as the elements are always taking a little bit away. Most of the names are more scratched than carved. Here is a sample from the top.
